What makes an effective Smoke Ventilation System?
Smoke Ventilation Systems are used to remove smoke and heat from buildings in the event of a fire, using automated opening vents or fans to clear smoke from common escape routes and aid the safe evacuation of occupants.
As these are life safety systems, ensuring they are effective at doing their duties should they be called upon throughout the life of the building is critical. How this is achieved is set out in various industry regulations, standards and best practice guides (see our ultimate guide here). Fundamentally, the system needs to be adequately designed, installed and maintained to meet the needs of the building and its occupants.
The entire system must have been properly installed by competent contractors using the right products, which must have been certified and be fit for purpose. All interrelated fire alarm and elements of the smoke vent system must be fully integrated, holistically tested as a system, and comprehensively handed over to the building owner. The building owner and its agents are then responsible for testing and maintaining the system in alignment with the various standards.
What are the key components to a smoke vent system?
-
The system is commonly made up of a number of automatic opening vents or fans, strategically placed around the building and operated according to a cause and effect strategy by a smoke ventilation controller.
-
A fire alarm system or stand alone smoke sensors normally send a signal to the controller to indicate the detection and location of a fire. The controller, in-turn, operates a specific combination of vents (and/or fans) according to the ventilation strategy to clear the relevant areas of the building of smoke.
-
Automatic opening vents are also known as smoke and heat exhaust ventilators (SHEV’s) and there are many common types including AOV windows, AOV louvres, AOV roof vents and smoke dampers. There are a number of relevant standards and industry certifications required in relation to the different types of components.
