CPD Training for the Smoke Ventilation Industry
Request access now to strengthen your understanding of smoke ventilation and its role in building safety. Build confidence in managing systems effectively and support safer, compliant environments.
Module 1: The Importance of Smoke Ventilation
Starts with the “why.” This module looks at how smoke ventilation systems reduce the risk of flashover, assist Fire & Rescue Services entering a building, and keep escape routes clear during evacuation. It includes current government fire fatality data and a walkthrough of how a system actually responds when smoke breaches a compartment — from detection through to vents opening.
Module 2: Typical Systems & Components
Covers the three main system types — natural, mechanical, and pressure differential — and when each is typically used. Also introduces the physical components you’ll encounter on site: AOVs, smoke control dampers, smoke fans, and control panels, along with the different system configurations (stairwell-only, natural smoke shaft, mechanical smoke shaft) used depending on building height and layout.
Module 3: Navigating Regulations, Standards & Guidance
The most detailed module, and the one most professionals come for. It maps out how legislation, regulations, Approved Documents and British Standards fit together — including Approved Document B, BS 9991:2024, BS 9999, and the BS EN 12101 product standard series. It also covers upcoming regulatory changes through 2029 and clears up one of the industry’s most persistent points of confusion: geometric vs aerodynamic free area.
Module 4: Understanding Responsibilities
Sets out who is legally responsible for what. Covers the Responsible Person’s duties under the Fire Safety Order, the additional obligations for Higher-Risk Buildings, competency requirements for installers and maintainers, and the documentation and record-keeping expected as part of the “golden thread.”
Module 5: Typical Challenges
A practical, real-world module looking at the most common issues found in existing buildings — missing zone lockout, uncertified vents, damaged or retrofitted dampers, roof vents that don’t open fully — and why these problems persist. Grounded in industry inspection data showing how widespread non-compliance still is.
Module 6: Achieving Ongoing Compliance
Closes with a practical toolkit: a quick-check list you can run through on-site, a recommended testing and maintenance schedule, and a step-by-step “road to compliance” for bringing an existing building back in line with current standards.
Who This CPD Is For
Fire & Security Contractors, Property managers, building safety professionals, facilities managers, architects, and anyone responsible for specifying, installing, or maintaining smoke ventilation systems in residential or commercial buildings.
What You’ll Come Away With
A working understanding of smoke ventilation systems and how they fit into a building’s fire strategy, familiarity with the key regulations and standards that apply, clarity on where responsibility sits, and a practical checklist for assessing an existing system.
